My “Onspot” Chains December 17, 2016

Wednesday, December 14, 2016.  https://youtu.be/37XGQdltQDw

As us drivers were leaving for our afternoon runs, the snow had started blowing, some.  We were told  to drive our normal routes , no inclement weather routes. Okay. Many of our buses have “Onspot” chains or automatic drop down chains.   ONSPOT   https://youtu.be/EwLCOqIUvsU.

All my elementary passengers were loaded and ready to head to the next school. Many of my passengers leave and transfer to other buses. I am usually left with 35-42 students.

On the way to the transfer school I was nervous going down the steep driveway. There was no way I could get to the speed of 5 mph in order to activate my “Onspot” chains, so I proceeded rather cautiously. As soon as I gained enough speed I flipped up the cover and pushed up the lever to turn on my “Onspot” chains. How thankful I was to feel the bump of the chains under my tires and hear wonderful sound of the jingling chains. There were many cars, on that 10 minute stretch of icy road, that swerved in front of me. After all, who wants to be behind a school bus ???                  I am always thrilled that my chains may be breaking up the ice, making for better traction for those who follow in my path.

We arrived safely at our transfer point. “Onspot” chains do not have to be cancelled when the bus is stopped, when the bus starts to move again, the chains go into action. This time was different. As I was taking my left out of the school, I saw cars slide driving down the slight hill. I could not hear the any chain noise. Finally, they kicked in. I made it up the hill took a careful right and then the chains were quiet, again.    I was heading to another steep incline and a right turn. With no chain noise. I decided to take an immediate left. I wanted to get onto the main road  from a flat area.  The signaled intersection was awful for all vehicles.  I had given myself enough room to keep moving forward, carefully and slowly. I had not shut off my chains, they remained silent.  Then, I heard their pleasant jingle noise. I would be fine. After-all, my route had gone through such drastic changes that I didn’t have any bad areas to travel.  I started praying for my co-workers. My route used to cover many of the awful hills, many of them would be driving on.  Oh that my co-workers would be safe. Oh that all our passengers would be safe. Oh that those around us inside or outside of vehicles would be safe. The weather was getting worse and yet more worse.

My chains quit, again. I paced carefully. It was very slick. I had had many close calls-many cars had slid around me to avoid my stop sign.  I eased around a right corner, my chains were working again. I was able to proceed, ever so cautiously. As I turned my next right, there was about 20 feet when my chains sounded. They quit at my next left. I had a kindy stop coming up. I wanted her to be safe. As I approached her stop, I had seen a car slide down the slight incline I was to traverse. My kindy was across the road, safely on her way.

I was at the base of the incline. I had no way to get up enough speed for momentum to help me up the hill. There was a car behind me that had slid to a stop and avoided tangling with my bumper. I accelerated enough to not slip and got half way up the hill. Then I started sliding backward. For whatever reason, the car behind me had stayed back. I tried to move forward, but to no avail. I needed to get the bus to stop. Suddenly, it gripped and I set the brake. I was pleased to have missed a mailbox.

After many moments, it was told to me to chain up. By that time, a couple of cars, had almost hit me:  one slid down the hill while the other was proceeding up the hill.

I did not put triangles out, they would have slid down the hill.  I was getting anxious. I had, at least 30 elementary passengers, and they were very hyper. One of my kindys has a voice that carries over anything. He kept yelling: “We’re going to die !!!”.  The bus was secure. I put my keys in my vest pocket.  Not on the carabiner clip on my work badge ???HTS L0-273 1 Pc Purple 47mm Mini Aluminum Carabiner with 16mm OpeningI assigned 2 helpers to help keep passengers in their seats. I figured the less movement the less chance of sliding downward, more. I proceeded to chaining.

~~~
As far as chaining goes, at the start of each school year us bus drivers have a chaining day. I love chaining day !!! I do a great job. BUT: the bus lot is level/ish. I usually do not need a coat. The ground is not slick.  We also check our “Onspot” chains. This year mine were a little slow at stopping, but performed well after a couple tries.
~~~

As I was getting ready to put the chain over the wheel, a car came very close to sliding into me. 2 men came to help. BUT, I had gotten so flustered and my task kept being interrupted by cars sliding towards me, that I did everything wrong. Well, one thing I did right, I put chocks behind my front tires. My vest was too cold. I stepped into the bus to get my coat. The kindy was still repeating his phrase scarring his bus mates. I hung up my vest on the back of my seat.

I needed to refix my mess-up with the chains. The men were trying to help in whatever way possible. One car crashed into a bush and they were able to help that driver.

Funny thing. All my bending under the bus, my wonderful glasses never fell off,  fogged up or got scratched !!!

One of the men and I were finishing tightening the chain on the road side. All of a sudden, a work mechanic, was approaching my bus-on foot. I noticed him when he slid towards me, there was no sure footing, on this area of ice. How did he know to help me ???     School helpers came and assisted with my passengers. Those precious ladies. Another lady offered to let all my passengers into her house to get warmed up. I had to explain that as a rule we are to not let passengers out of the bus until their designated stop. No one else can take a child unless we see I.D., they need to be on the designated list for picking up and we must be given permission from dispatch. Her kindness helped ease my tension.

The bus was chained, chocks moved to behind back wheels, in case sliding happened. The mechanic was sure the chains were tight enough, but he was going to move the bus forward enough to get me to a good place to continue my route. He needed the key. I couldn’t find the key~~~because I had not put it on my carabiner   HTS L0-273 1 Pc Purple 47mm Mini Aluminum Carabiner with 16mm Opening . I checked everywhere: pulled down my cover/rain pants. Checked my ski pants, shoes, coat pockets, under the bus. I checked everywhere I could thing of. A search was on. The mechanic had an idea. He was in the driver seat, I had sat in seat 2 to talk with the kindy who had everyone scarred. I stood up to talk to the mechanic. My hand landed on my vest.  I knew where the bus key was located. Yep, my left vest pocket.

Were my blunders finished ??? Nope.  The mechanic told me to let dispatch know I was back on the road. The radio was very quiet. I was near the CTC when I let dispatch know I would be late to MHS. I could not figure out why there was no one else having problems. I noticed the word busy on my radio. For some reason I turned the volume knob-I guess the mechanic had turned the volume down and I didn’t realize it. It wasn’t long until I could hear the many problems. I felt so awful for everyone. My gut wrinkled with each difficulty. My guilt because of my ineptness grew~~~I never want to make things difficult for dispatch !!!   I am sure I did, that crazy Wednesday afternoon.  There is a lot more to be told, maybe another time.

I will end on this note: I am thankful for all our wonderful dispatch and all who helped out during the messy storm !!! Our mechanics are the best !!! How blessed for the many other workers that helped stranded buses !!! I am SUPER grateful that our passengers made it home safely !!! There were many that had to help behind the scenes !!! AND to my fellow bus drivers, all of you are special to me in various ways !!! I am glad this storm did not defeat you !!! I pray for all to find a positive in this HUGE trial !!! Blessings to ALL my co-workers at NCSD#12 !!!

... And all the kids said Yahoo!! :) ...Snow day, yay!

Have A Blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year !!!

Psalm 23 was one of Shawn’s favorite scriptures. Before the fire Dec. of 2012, I had told him my ornament idea for 2013. He had commented that this would have been his favorite ornament. He never saw it.   The design may seem silly, but I cherish it as my memorial ornament for Shawn.

2014 / Hint   Just a hint for 2014.

*** Regarding organizing:          I was so thrilled to receive a text from my friend, regarding our organizing project.  She shared with me some of the things she had accomplished.  She has been, joyfully, taking garbage out, daily. She VACUUMED !!!   The dishwasher-inside and out, looks great !!! The stove and dishwasher look brand new.   The hours, at her job, have increased-so I will rework our game plan.                                                                         I went over Friday, after work. I wanted to reshuffle and figure out some future goals.    When my friend arrived home, she asked if I looked around to see what she had done.  I had not, I wanted her to give me a tour and tell me.  It was my hope she would realize her accomplishments, by verbalizing them to me.   The result- well, I will use her word from a text*** “YIPPEE !!!”               The both of us have busy schedules. Our organizing task may take some time. I must tell you, though, there is a reward in hearing the happiness, in my friend’s voice, as she shares & shows her accomplishments.

*** Regarding exercise:   Firm 30 is the name of the 2nd workout, on this DVD.                                                                                                          It is surprising for as simple as the exercises are, this workout makes me shaky.  I am finally able to get through the whole workout. My joints aren’t so creaky. The lunges are hard to do, but my knees feel so much better.  When doing crunches, I am having a hard time keeping my head up, the whole time.    It gets me how much I have been sweating, for several minutes afterward.   This is 7 of 33.   Forward On !!!                                                                                                                                     Oh wait !!!   One of my friends, at work, one morning, was talking about how she needed to start walking the track before work. Her doctor had told her that exercise at the beginning of the day was best.                 I  have been so tired, at the end of the day,  that I was afraid I would fall out of my exercise routine.  I asked her if we  could start walking, before we clocked in ?  We have been able to walk 4 laps, Monday – Friday.     For the both of us, that is a BIG deal.     What is more exciting—another co-worker joined us.    PLUS, I heard someone else is interested.   For now, we are enjoying  the dry warm mornings. I mentioned that it was going to be more challenging when the weather changed to rain.  I have decided that I am going to make every effort, then, to continue lapping.   BUT, if I am unable  to lap,  I will use Firm 30  for 33 times.     After that I will decide which workout I will start.   I must admit, the lapping has been enjoyable !!!

In closing, this week was very stressful with many challenges. The thing that gets me: Why do I catch myself having sad moments regarding Shawn’s goneness ?   Why do I, still, have so many regret filled times.   Why is there such a gaping hole ?                                                                          I am looking  for the light at the end of my tunnel. My apologies.                                                                                                                        Bye, K                                                  mygriefjourney

Regarding My Ornaments: part 2 of 3 September 6. 2014

To start off, I need to explain about The Nativity Tree / The Advent Tree. It was my take on the original from: .     Melissa, Shawn and I just painted the ideas rather than cut them from felt.  I used to hang it up after Thanksgiving.  I, also, used it in the 2 & 3 year old Sunday School class I had taught for a few years.  Now, it is more of a treasure because of the memories attached to it.

The 1st ornament 2003 /  Wire Star.  On the 3/3 post,   I will have a list with each ornament year and it’s name.

2004 / The Rose: the words on the card are from a song Bob likes, sung during Christmas time. He gave me the idea for this ornament .

From the song: "Lo, How a Rose e'er Blooming" Christmas time 2003, Bob thought there should be some kind-of ornament I could come up with, for this song.

2005 /  King Of Kings.  I had visions of this turning out wonderful. I did not buy fabric suitable for the Pretty Punch tool. Oh well.                                                                                                      Each ornament takes a lot of thought. I like to make them so I can work on them, anywhere.   I get the  various parts ready for assembly time.

Used pretty punch

2005 / King of Kings

2006 / Heart / Names For God-were on the card.  I hope to find the original. The dark type and dark paper made it hard for folks to read.  My apologies.

Names for God

2007 / Star.   It seems that Shawn was the only one to realize the lighter paper and that if held up to the light the star showed through the orn shape design on the paper.

Shawn was the only one to realize I had made the card out of lightweight paper and the star could be seen through the ornament design.

2008=JMJ. Mom and 2 other  people, out of at least 150, were able to figure this design.    Joseph with his arms around Mary and  baby Jesus.

First time at sauteing. Kind of a puzzle. Out of at least 150 of these sent out, I think I recall about 3 people figured the shape of Joseph, Mary and Jesus.

     Regarding organizing:   Since a friend has asked for my help, I have put off my personal organizing. It is my hope that we can make her apartment a comfortable place to be. In time, I hope she will be able to use her cooking and sewing talents, to bring joy to others. The goal I keep pushing for.   Through our time I will share tidbits to help bring encouragement to others who may need to organize.                                                                                                                             I have spent some time shuffling items.  I have a place set up for sewing items.  There are containers of clothes that we will sort through. When an item needs to be given away or returned, it goes to the front door area.   Each week I ask her to accomplish 3 tasks for me.
Before I started helping my friend, this is what she said about her living situation:   She would come in;  bathe, sleep, barely exist.  She saw no way out. She was drowning.  She had no hope-of having a place she would love to come home to.   Then the first day happened.  During our 2nd get together, I had plans of going through the spare room-I wanted to have a place to organize from.  My friend had other plans for the day, but was willing to let me stay and shuffle.   I use the shuffling time to think of ways to make the reorganizing work best. Since school is back in session, my time is limited.                                                                                           I, also, need to make sure I am not being to pushy about the process.   Since Shawn’s death, I am very aware of things being overwhelming.  Plus, when it comes to letting go of items-when one is in the grief process, some of us have a harder time letting go.                                 I have made my friend cry a few times. The day she had been gone while I worked on the spare room.  The day she was gone and I shuffled , in the kitchen.                                                      During one of our talks, my friend mentioned about her front door. The manager didn’t understand why it looked so awful-tape marks from delivery people.  In a few minutes,Old English Scratch Cover For Dark Woods, 8 oz. gave the door a refreshed look.    I have encouraged my friend to find a couple of items to have outside her door-that are cheerful. I want her to be able to see those items and take a deep breath and be glad to open the door. Down the road, I will be thrilled for her to open her door for guests.                                                                                                       My friend  has worked on her own to make the kitchen area a place she can enjoy. She was so thrilled about what had been accomplished, that she made a pasta salad, put cooking things away and even made pickles.          Here are some giant steps:  she has been opening the curtains !!!  That is a huge deal to me—I am one of those folks that needs to be able to view out windows.  She has been taking garbage out regularly-might I say-she was cheerful when she told me.  She has been working on assignments.                                                                              For now, the progress has been amazing. The happiest thing for me is that my friend isn’t dreading going to her apartment.    I am thrilled that she is making efforts with our weekly assignments.

Exercising: today is 1 of 33, for part 2 of Walk it off in 30 days.  I  really like this program.  I am not losing the weight as I would like, but I feel so much better after a workout.  Not giving up— Forward On !!!
Bye for now, K

Regarding My Ornaments: Part 1 of 3 August 30, 2014

My ornament journey began about 1993, with this book:For The Ornament Tree. Melissa, Shawn and myself, made this felt Nativity Tree:

Melissa & Shawn helped me paint the designs. Melissa had a steady hand for painting the sun. Shawn had less steady hands painting the manger, which left a paint smudge on the fancy wood table, I failed to protect.

Around 1995, this is the card Bob and I sent out:

Bob made the card. I had the task of enveloping and mailing.

Bob made the card. I had the task of enveloping and mailing.

For some reason, I started making ornaments.  They are unusual.  After going to a Christmas Bazaar, at the Expo Center, December 1, 2012.  I had told Shawn, that night, that I should stop making ornaments-mine were too different. He was very adamant in telling me how much he loved everything I made. He wanted me to keep making the ornaments for his children to have.  He said, “Something special from Gram K.”  The fire happened December 4, 2012.

Over the past few months, several folks showed me their display of the ornaments I have made. Come to find out, many of them keep the ornaments up year round.  All were wanting to know what year each ornament was made, and what card went with it. Most of all, they wanted to make sure they had all the ornaments.    Well, I did not know.  Sooo… I decided to take the next 2 or 3 posts to show each ornament with its card and the year it was made.                        Please do not take this as being braggadocios.   I just didn’t know of a better way to display the ornaments with their card, easily. in one place,  so I could help folks figure what ornament they might be missing.                      I cannot remember when my Mom suggested year markers, so, if you have an ornament with no year marker, I can send it to you.  The year markers can be attached easily with needle nose pliers.  Email me at:  mrskitz@frontier.com                                           Here is what makes me chuckle: It happened while I was visiting my friends near Mt. Hood.  They were showing me how they had decorated their garage, with a pool table. I am not the only person who uses their garage for other than cars—YES !!!   Well, anyway, on one of the cupboard knobs, I saw a neat wire star.  I told my friend how much I liked it.  She laughed, as she told me, I had made it.
